What is Aesthetic Dentistry?
Aesthetic dentistry includes all the required dental treatments to achieve a perfect
smile. Orthodontics, porcelain veneers (laminates), porcelain crowns, periodontal
(gum tissue) operations, surgery and teeth bleaching can be applied
combined or separately to the patients.
What is a Porcelain Veneer? What is the treatment procedure?
Porcelain veneer (dental laminate) is a thin shell of porcelain that is bonded to the outer side of the tooth. The thin porcelain shell absorbs more light so therefore aes-thetics is at a maximum stage.
The adjacent teeth contacts of the teeth will be prepared for laminate veneers, and the occlusal relations should be examined before the treatment indication. Generally thin preparation is done to the front surfaces of teeth that laminates are going to be attached to.
In following cases porcelain veneers can be bonded onto the front side of the tooth without preparation of the tooth.
* If the teeth are in a correct position in the arch
* When the tooth alignment is proper
* When the presence of a space between the adjacent teeth is given
* When the gingiva level is harmonious with the neighbour teeth’s gingiva level
In which cases is an orthodontic treatment needed before porcelain veneer treatments?
In the presence of crowding, midline shifting, a large sagittal step between the upper and lower incisors, and malocclusion.
What is the appropriate age for porcelain veneer?
It is wise for the patient to wait until he/she is 18-20 years old. Until then aesthetic composite fillings can be applied to the teeth without a tooth preparation.
How long can porcelain veneers be used?
Depends on the health of the gum tissue, the bone and the tooth surface around the laminated tooth. Also it varies from person to person. Oral hygiene plays a big role. The better the hygiene is the longer can the porcelain veneers stay healthy and nice. Porcelain veneers can be kept in place until problems start occurring between gingiva level and the veneer border. The reasons to change and make new porcelain ve-neers are gingival recessions, presence of a cavity, fracture or chip out of a piece of the veneer.
Can the porcelain veneer be off of the tooth or fail?
After veneers are bonded to the teeth, the patient has to take good care of his/her oral region. If the patient has bruxism, he/she must have a night mouthguard. Also patient should not bite hard food and things on the veneered teeth. As long as the patient takes good care of the veneer will not fall off or fail. The contemporary adhesives are strong enough for a very good bonding.
When should the orthodontic retainers be placed, before or after the porcelain veneer bonding?
The ideal timing for orthodontic retainer is after bonding the veneers. Until this time patient should use the transparent aligners (Essix retainers). However, practical re-ality is different from that theory. Generally two different doctors treat the patients in different clinics. Because of distance between two clinics, and the changing sizes of the temporaries it is difficult for the patients to go back and forth between the clinics. Also the fact that patients don’t use the aligners properly day and night time, a re-verse relapsed teeth movement occurs. So that is why we suggest to apply retainers right after orthodontic treatment and before veneering procedure. The retainers are checked again after veneer permanent bonding, since hard silicone impression can pull off the bonded retainer wire from the tooth surface.
Is it possible to make porcelain veneers as large – and long – as the patient wants?
There are some boundaries concerning health of the teeth and surrounding tissues. Patients’ anatomical features are important in planning the length and size.
Is it possible to apply a porcelain veneer to a single tooth?
It is hard and challenging to obtain the same colour tone with the adjacent tooth, but yes it is possible. Good teamwork with the dental technician is needed.
Be whiter teeth, healthy smiles.
